Project / Product Delivery Pains? Have you considered the benefits of a contractor? – by Philip Fanthom

There is little doubt, in the current employment market, that demand is outstripping supply. This is particularly true within the highly technical roles (Architects, Software Engineers, Technical Testers, Cyber Consultants, Mobile Developers….etc)

If you are currently experiencing difficulty on boarding the required technical talent; have you considered a contractor option?

The-Benefits-of-Working-as-an-Accounting-Contractor

There is often a misconception around the advantages and disadvantages to engaging shorter term skills for your IT projects. People can view contract resource as an expensive overhead. There is a school of thought that it may be better to consider contract experts as more of direct ROI (return on investment) purchase of services.

If you are mapping out the project costs, particularly if this project involves build/release of a product; perhaps you may wish to consider ‘opportunity cost’ – how much will it cost the business if you do NOT get your project finished and product released? Could it be worth a short term investment in expertise to get the project complete and product released?

Here are some of the advantages to engaging an expert contractor for your business:

1. Affordability

To build your business culture it is always preferable to employ and nurture talent.  But for a lot of projects, it’s far more efficient (and just as effective) to hire contract expert talent.

If you choose a perception of a contract expert as an employee, then it will seem as though the contract option is more expensive. However, if you view the purchase of IT expertise in the same way that you view the purchase of equipment, then this can position contract expertise quite favourably when considering the implication of your IT project (and the build/release of your product) or completion of your business transformation….etc. In addition, if you were to compare the cost of an independent contract expert against a consultancy, then you should note a significant potential for cost saving.

2. Flexibility

The reason businesses across the world choose to utilise contract resource is to avail of a flexible and scalable workforce. Depending on workload and project demands, there is the ability to add extra resource and expertise to ensure delivery. As the work demands ease off, there is the option to reduce the workforce (hassle free).

3. Immediacy

Related to flexibility is immediacy. If you have your onboarding program planned (including interview dates and times) and choose a professional recruitment partner then, from the moment of demand, you can have resource onsite working within 5 working days.

4. Experience

Good contractors have a lot of experience with a lot of different businesses. Each job they work on and each client they work for adds more knowledge to their craft, more skills to their arsenal. You get the benefit of all that experience on all your jobs too.

5. Independence

One of the hassles of hiring new staff is all the time you have to invest in training before they are really up to speed and able to make valuable contributions to your bottom line. Contractors, on the other hand, are used to getting up to speed on day 1. You will need to define your expectations clearly, and give them access to the company information resources they’ll need, but you won’t have to sit with them and explain everything.

You’ll be able to focus on your own projects while your freelancer completes the assignments you’ve given them. In addition, they can provide a fresh perspective, free of any preconceived ideas that your permanent staff may have acquired during their employment. Finally, professional contractors will have all their insurances and professional certificates in place to give you peace of mind and save you time and money.
